Pietrosul Rodnei Natural Reservation , housing the highest peak in Eastern Carpathians, is biosphere reservation and is part of the UNESCO reservations system. The protected territory covers an area of over 3,000 ha. Various species of plants and animals are protected here. Among the rare species of plants that are to be found here are: the edelweiss, “the bear's honey” and “the dove's crop”. The protected fauna includes the chamois, the marmot, the lynx, the rock eagle, the birch cock and the mountain cock. The reservation also includes an especially beautiful natural scenery untouched by the man.

The balneal resort of Borsa lies at the foot of Rodnei Mountains, in the middle of a picturesque landscape. The main characteristic of this resort is a combination between a number of modern therapies and the natural spa elements, which create a benefic biostimulation of the body and has proved efficient in the therapy of cardiovascular, endocrine, respiratory, neuro-locomotory and neurological diseases. Among other means of entertainment are to be noted the following: ski slopes for any category of skiers, double chair lift (1.99 km long), rope tow (2.9 km).

The balneal and climatic resort of Ocna Sugatag is located at the edge of a forest called Craiasa, 50 km away from Sacel. The local mineral waters are recommended for rheumatism, diseases of the locomotory system, peripheral nervous system, respiratory system and for gynecological diseases. The visitors of this resort can use the local chloride, sodium and calcined mineral waters. There are two large pools and a small pool with cold mineral water for baths and air- and helio-therapy, installations for electrotherapy; aerosol installations; two pools and three tubs with heated mineral waters; installations for physiotherapy; paraffine wrapping, underwater shower and galvanic baths.

“The Blue Spring of the Iza River” natural reservation is situated near the commune of Sacel. The cave here was formed at the contact area between the crystalline shale of Rodnei Mountains and a limestone layer and is 2,500 m long. The water comes to the surface through a very beautiful high-flow intermittent spring.

The Valley of the Vaser is one of the wildest and most beautiful valleys in Romania. It has a 43-km forest railway which was built between the two world wars and was preserved miraculously to the period of glory of forest roads. The railway offers an unexpected way of access to a number of places from which travellers can hike the Mountains of Maramures. The only way to get up the valley is by the train.
